Background
Jarey Gewog is situated towards the west of Tsenkhar Gewog and south of Metsho Gewog under Lhuentse Dzongkhag. The altitude ranges from 1500m2400m above the sea level. It takes more than three hour to reach the gewog centre from Autsho by walk. The total area of gewog is about 137.61sq.km and bordered with Mongar Dzongkhag in the south and Bumthang Dzongkhag in the west.
Climate & Topography
Jarey Gewog lies in both temperate and sub-tropical climatic condition whereby extreme cold in winter and moderate in summer, humid and foggy. is the farthest geog from the Dzongkhag head quarter located in the south. It is thinly populated and has an area of 137.61sq.km. The settlement of this geog is scattered and isolated on the slope and ridges, which are facing towards south. The topography of Jarey Gewog is very rugged with sharp rises of hills. About 80% of the gewog is covered with different types of forest and the goweg falls under Thrumsingla National Park. Towards east there are large area of chir pine and lemon grass on the steep slope watershed to Kurichu and Shungmanchu. The topography is very rugged terrain.
Land Use
The land use dominated by dry land accounting for 1036.8acres and hence maize is the main food crop followed by wheat, legume, mustard. Besides, some negligible quantity of paddy is produced in the few terraces of 60.56acres. However, the most of the land holding lying in the steep slopes remains uncultivated and barren owing to the labour shortages as well as crops being damaged by wild animals. The main crop variety promoted and adopted is maize variety Yangtsipa which is known for high yielding capacity. The small quantity of upland rice cultivation is adopted apart from paddy cultivation. The geog is considered as the poorest geog in the Dzongkhag. Moreover, inaccessibility to motor able road and limited marketing opportunities discourages farmers from growing surpluses despite having favorable climatic condition
People and Institution
The people of Jarey speak Kurtoep (Chocha Ngacha). The geog head quarter is located in Ngang Ngae, most of the formal institutions such as health facilities, school, agriculture; livestock and forestry centre are placed in the geog. Since the settlements are dispersed there are three outreach clinics established in order to have access to health facilities and non formal education program were also effective in this geog. There are several local festivals and rituals-Lha (local festivals) which have their own unique traits and special characteristics and celebrated round the year. The geog is mainly dependent on subsistence farming. While part time weaving is not famous with women and men are engaged in off-farm activities.
